Krk is the most accessible Croatian island, joined to the mainland by a bridge since 1980, and Rijeka's airport sits on the island itself, near Omišalj. That combination of bridge and airport means Krk lacks the usual island isolation, so people buy here for year-round living and not only for the summer. The island is surprisingly varied: the northern end around Omišalj and Njivice is windy and stony; Malinska in the west has the most new build and the best-kept promenades; Punat holds one of the largest marinas on the Adriatic; Vrbnik stands on a cliff above the sea and is known for its žlahtina wine; and Baška in the south carries a long shingle beach beneath steep hills. Krk town in the middle has kept its walls and medieval core and works as the administrative centre with services open all year. With Rijeka and Zagreb close by, many owners here combine their own use with letting and never have to think about a ferry timetable.
Buyers from Zagreb and Rijeka for whom the island needs no ferry, alongside German, Austrian and Slovenian families who have been coming here for decades. A growing number look to Krk for a permanent address, since the bridge and the airport make year-round living workable.
